{"id":384,"date":"2011-04-12T22:11:07","date_gmt":"2011-04-13T05:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/?p=384"},"modified":"2018-06-27T20:04:46","modified_gmt":"2018-06-28T03:04:46","slug":"siddham-650-ad-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/12\/siddham-650-ad-india\/","title":{"rendered":"Siddham &#8212; 650 AD, India"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_385\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/siddhamJa.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-385\" class=\"size-full wp-image-385\" title=\"siddhamJa\" src=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/siddhamJa.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Siddham &#8220;ja&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Buddhists in around 400 AD wrote Sanskrit with a version of <a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/04\/02\/gupta-400-ad-india\/\">Gupta<\/a> script that eventually diverged into Siddham script.\u00a0 At first, writing down the Sanskrit was used mostly as a memorization aid, but when Buddhism spread to the much-more literate China, apparently things needed to be written down to be taken seriously.\u00a0 Problem: to recite the mantras properly, you needed to be able to pronounce them properly, and the logographic <a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/08\/chinese-traditional-chinese\/\">Chinese script<\/a> did a really bad job of showing how you should pronounce syllables.\u00a0 Thus the Siddham script moved from being useful to being critical.<\/p>\n<p>A pair of Japanese monks, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/K%C5%ABkai\">Kukai<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saich%C5%8D\">Saicho<\/a>, traveled to China to study in the early 800s.
