{"id":457,"date":"2011-05-11T21:55:46","date_gmt":"2011-05-12T04:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/?p=457"},"modified":"2018-07-01T14:18:59","modified_gmt":"2018-07-01T21:18:59","slug":"pau-cin-hau-alphabet-1931-ad-mayanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/11\/pau-cin-hau-alphabet-1931-ad-mayanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Pau Cin Hau alphabet &#8212; 1931 AD, Mayanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_459\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/pauCinHauR.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-459\" class=\"size-full wp-image-459\" title=\"pauCinHauR\" src=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/pauCinHauR.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"151\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-459\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pau Cin Hau &#8220;r&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/10\/pau-cin-hau-logograms-1902-ad-mayanmar\/\">Pau Cin Hau logographic script<\/a> was reformed in 1931 AD, moving from a logographic language to an alphabet.\u00a0 While it is not unusual for a phonetic writing system to evolve from a logographic writing system, it is very rare to do so in only 29 years.<\/p>\n<p><em>Update: I have found several other examples of a script starting logographic and then shifting to something else.\u00a0\u00a0Sequoyah\u00a0 experimented with logograms before shifting to a syllabary for Cherokee;\u00a0 same with King Njoya for Bamun (in fourteen years) and\u00a0Uyaquq for Yugtun script.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition to consonants and vowels, the script also has 9 characters for final consonants and 20 tone marks.<\/p>\n<p>The term &#8220;tone mark&#8221; is misleading, as they actually represent much more than the pitch.\u00a0 They also represent vowel length, the glottal stop, and punctuation.<\/p>\n<p>The American Baptist missionary Joseph H.
