{"id":506,"date":"2011-05-30T20:47:39","date_gmt":"2011-05-31T03:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/?p=506"},"modified":"2011-05-31T09:53:12","modified_gmt":"2011-05-31T16:53:12","slug":"saurashtra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/30\/saurashtra\/","title":{"rendered":"Saurashtra &#8212; <1880AD, India"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_507\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/saurashtraPha.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-507\" class=\"size-full wp-image-507\" title=\"saurashtraPha\" src=\"http:\/\/glyphs.webfoot.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/saurashtraPha.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100\" height=\"129\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saurashtra &quot;pha&quot;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Saurashtra people have a very unsettled past.\u00a0 They lived in Gujarat, but then <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mahmud_of_Ghazni\">Gazni Mohammed<\/a> invaded around 1000 AD and the Saurashtras took off for Devagiri, farther south.\u00a0 They stayed there for two centuries, but then that empire collapsed and they were on the move again, even farther south to another kingdom.\u00a0 They were traditionally weavers, and frequently were royal weavers, enjoying the patronage of the local king.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps their being a perpetual minority for the past thousand years (and living by the grace of the local king for hundreds of years of that) contributed to them not sticking fiercely to their own language and\/or script.\u00a0 Indeed, my sources don&#8217;t cite any material in the Saurashtra script before the late 1800s, when Medhavi Sri T.M.
